Morning briefing app for iPhone: how to hear your day the moment you wake
A morning briefing reads weather, calendar and your first task aloud so you get up with a reason. Four ways to do it on iPhone: a free Shortcuts automation after your alarm, a phone call from MorningCall, a coach voice from AVA, or TARS which wakes you by name and plays your day on one tap.

A morning briefing app reads weather, calendar and tasks aloud when the alarm goes off. Four routes on iPhone: a Shortcuts automation after the Clock alarm, a phone call from MorningCall, a coach voice from AVA, or TARS which wakes you with a voice and reads your day on one tap.
The four routes side by side
| Route | What it reads | Voice | Rings through Silent and Focus | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clock alarm plus Shortcuts automation | Weather, calendar events and spoken text you choose. Trigger when alarm goes off or is stopped; actions Get Current Weather, Find Calendar Events, Speak Text. | Siri's voice on your iPhone. | The Clock alarm rings on Silent. Speech runs after you stop the alarm, so it does not wake you on its own. | Free. You set it up and maintain the script. |
| MorningCall | A briefing by phone call: news headlines, local weather, a motivational line. Does not read your calendar. | Generated voice, sounds like a person calling. | Yes, it is a phone call (per the app's page). | Free. Pro tier $4.99 to $6.19. |
| AVA | A spoken wake-up written each morning around your goals; reads Google Calendar, tasks from Todoist, TickTick, Notion, Jira, Asana, Linear. Streaks and insights. | Several coach voices. | Requires iOS 17, so AlarmKit is not available. App page does not state whether it rings on Silent. | Free. AVA Pro $9.99 a month, $59.99 a year. |
| TARS | Date, weather with an umbrella call, today's Calendar events, Reminders. About a minute. Empty sources are skipped. | Four British voices. The free briefing is read by the phone's voice; TARS+ uses the agent's real voice. | Yes. Built on Apple's AlarmKit, iOS 26.1 or later. Rings with app closed. | Free: alarm, voice wake-up, on-device briefing. TARS+ $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year after a 7-day trial. |
We make TARS, so read that row the way you would read any vendor's list. Facts about the other apps come from their US App Store pages and websites on October 9, 2026. Prices change.
Route one: the Clock alarm plus a Shortcuts automation, free
The Shortcuts app has an Alarm trigger: an automation can run when an alarm goes off, is snoozed or is stopped. Build one that runs when your morning alarm is stopped and add three actions: Get Current Weather, Find Calendar Events for today, and Speak Text with the results joined into a sentence.
What you get is a real briefing in Siri's voice for nothing. What you give up: the setup is yours to maintain, the wording is whatever you can glue together in Shortcuts, and the speech starts only after you have stopped the alarm, so it will not get you out of bed on its own. Try it one evening and see whether speech plays before you unlock; that depends on your automation and lock settings.
Route two: a phone call (MorningCall)
MorningCall rings your phone with a spoken briefing. The briefing includes news headlines, weather and a motivational line. It works because a phone call is a system event that rings through Silent mode.
Keep your Clock app alarm as a backup the first week. MorningCall does not read your calendar, only its built-in sources.
Route three: a coach voice (AVA)
AVA writes a new wake-up every morning around goals you set, your streaks and the weather, and reads what is ahead from Google Calendar and task apps you connect. The tone is a personal coach. It lists iOS 17 as its minimum, and its App Store page does not say whether it rings through Silent, so test that before you trust it on a workday.
Route four: a voice alarm that reads your day (TARS)
TARS is the one we make, so here is exactly what it does. At your time a British voice says your name and ends with a question, as the alarm sound itself. The phrase is stored on the phone, so no network is involved in waking you. Tap once and he reads the date, the weather with a call on the umbrella, your Calendar events and your Reminders, in about a minute, skipping anything that is empty. The alarm is built on AlarmKit, so it rings through Silent and Focus with the app closed.
The free tier reads the briefing with the phone's voice from data that never leaves the device. TARS+ sends the day's titles once to write the briefing and voice it in the agent's real voice, and adds a wake-up check that rings again if you are not up. $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year after a 7-day trial.
What a good briefing leaves out
A minute is a good length. It wakes you and gives you a reason to get up. More than that and you are reading the news in bed.
A good briefing refuses to read news you did not ask for, motivational lines ('You got this'), every weather number, or empty calendar days. If you build your own, write the sentence a friend would say when you call them at seven in the morning, then cut it in half.
FAQ
Can Siri give me a morning briefing automatically?
Siri has no built-in alarm briefing. You can use the Shortcuts app to build one: trigger when your Clock alarm stops, then Get Current Weather and Speak Text. It is free and stays on your phone.
Which app reads my calendar out loud in the morning?
TARS reads the iPhone Calendar and Reminders on the device. AVA reads Google Calendar and connected task apps. A Shortcuts automation can read Calendar events too. MorningCall reads news and weather, not your calendar.
Does a morning briefing need my data in the cloud?
Not necessarily. The Shortcuts route and the free TARS briefing read your calendar on the phone. AVA connects cloud accounts. A TARS+ briefing sends the day's event titles once to write and voice it. MorningCall reads public news and weather.
How long should a morning briefing be?
About a minute. Enough to know the weather, your first meeting and a reason to get up. More than that becomes news reading in bed. Empty sources should be skipped.
Will a briefing app ring if my iPhone is on Silent?
Apps built on AlarmKit in iOS 26 do, and so does a phone call. TARS states AlarmKit on its App Store page; MorningCall rings as a call. With a Shortcuts automation the Clock alarm rings and the speech follows. AVA does not state it.
Hear your day with one tap
TARS wakes you by name, then reads weather, calendar and reminders in about a minute. Free alarm, AlarmKit, no account.
