Heavy sleeper alarm: what works when you sleep through everything
Three fixes in order: the same wake time every day, an alarm that the Silent switch cannot mute, and a second step after the first ring. Some of these apps handle all three. Others handle the last two.

Fix three things in order: the same wake time every day, an alarm that the Silent switch or a Focus cannot mute, and a second step after the first ring (a mission or a wake-up check); the iPhone apps below cover the last two.

Why you sleep through it
Three things are usually behind it. You carry sleep debt from earlier in the week, so the body holds on to sleep. The alarm lands in a deep phase rather than a light one. Or you have learned to dismiss the alarm half asleep and do not remember doing it. The first two improve with a steadier schedule. The third needs an alarm that does not take a half-asleep answer.
If you sleep through alarms most mornings after a full night, talk to a doctor before you buy another app.
Step one: the same wake time, even on weekends
Pick a wake time you can keep seven days a week and hold it for two weeks before judging any app. A body that expects the alarm wakes more easily than one that is surprised by it. Weekend lie-ins move the expectation and Monday pays for it. This step costs nothing and the apps below cannot replace it.
Step two: an alarm that nothing silences
Until iOS 26, only Apple's Clock app could ring through the Silent switch, Focus modes, and Do Not Disturb. Third-party alarms were notifications with a short sound, muted by Silent or Focus. In iOS 26 Apple added AlarmKit, which lets other apps schedule system alarms like the Clock app does.
Apps that state they are built on AlarmKit and ring through Silent and Focus: TARS, Rooster, AlarmK, ToDo Alarm, MeetAlarm. Alarmy, Weky, Sleep Cycle, and Rise do not mention it. Whatever you choose, test one alarm with the Silent switch on and a Focus active before you rely on it.
Step three: something after the first ring
An alarm that only rings does half the job. You need either a task that forces you upright or a reason to stay up.
Missions make getting up mandatory: solve a math problem, do squats, scan a code in the bathroom, take a photo. Alarmy, Weky and AlarmK offer them. Rooster takes a different line: snooze is allowed, and it always rings again. Some people find a mission at six in the morning hard to forgive.
A voice that reads your day gives you a reason instead of a task. TARS reads the weather, your calendar and your reminders in about a minute. TARS+ adds a wake-up check: a few minutes after the alarm the voice asks if you are really up, and rings again if there is no answer.
Volume, placement, light
- No app can be louder than the iPhone's ringer volume. Set it to maximum for the night and the app has done all it can.
- Put the phone across the room so you have to stand up to dismiss the alarm.
- Open the curtains or put a lamp on a timer a few minutes before the alarm. Light makes the first minutes easier.
FAQ
What is the loudest alarm app for iPhone?
No app can be louder than your iPhone's ringer volume setting. All apps follow that limit. If you sleep through the maximum volume, put your phone across the room instead of on your nightstand.
Why does my iPhone alarm not go off?
Before iOS 26 third-party alarms were notifications, muted by Silent mode or Focus. iOS 26 added AlarmKit, which lets apps schedule system alarms like Apple's Clock app. If using an older app on an older iOS, upgrade or switch apps.
Does Do Not Disturb silence alarms?
Apple's Clock app and AlarmKit apps like TARS ring through Do Not Disturb and Focus. Older apps do not. Test with Do Not Disturb on before you rely on any alarm.
Is snooze bad for heavy sleepers?
For a heavy sleeper snooze is a second chance to dismiss the alarm half asleep. TARS has no snooze button; the voice asks a question and waits. Rooster keeps snooze but it always rings again.
Which alarm app rings even if the phone restarted overnight?
Rooster states this in its App Store description. AlarmKit alarms are system alarms, so they should survive a restart. Check the app's own page or test it yourself.
An alarm that checks you are really up
TARS wakes you by name, and TARS+ asks a few minutes later whether you are really up and rings again if you are not. Free alarm, AlarmKit, no account.
